Write a simple specification for the set
A specification does not need to be a formal document. A few lines can define the orientation, piece count, order, target use, and naming pattern. For example: “Create three vertical panels from every wide image, read left to right, and name each group with the project code plus 01–03.” That sentence removes uncertainty from the production stage and gives reviewers something objective to check.
Include a rule for exceptions. Some sources may not support the standard pattern because a face, title, or essential object lands directly under a guide. Decide whether those images can use a revised crop, should be excluded, or may use an approved alternative layout. Handling exceptions deliberately is better than quietly changing the settings halfway through the collection.
Record these choices before starting
- Horizontal, vertical, or grid mode.
- Strip count or exact row and column counts.
- The intended viewing and file order.
- A shared naming and folder convention.
- The permitted response to a bad boundary.
Prepare the source images consistently
Collect the master files before splitting begins. Mixed sources—such as one camera original, one screenshot, and one image saved from a chat—can produce obvious differences in sharpness and dimensions. Use the best available version of each visual and keep those masters untouched in their own folder. Create working exports for any cropping or color adjustments.
Apply global edits before making pieces. Orientation, overall crop, brightness, and color should be settled while each composition is still whole. If related photographs need to feel like a set, compare them side by side at this stage. Editing individual tiles later is slower and can create visible shifts where neighboring pieces meet.
For exact grids, normalize source aspect ratios or canvas dimensions when the design allows it. Equal inputs produce equal output dimensions under the same row and column settings. Do not stretch a photograph merely to force it into the standard; a considered crop or background extension is usually more natural. If normalization damages the subject, document the image as an exception instead.
Choose boundaries that work across the collection
A shared split pattern creates order, but it should still respect every composition. Preview the planned lines over representative sources before processing the entire set. Include a simple image, a busy one, a close-up, and any layout containing text. If the same pattern works for these difficult examples, it is more likely to work throughout the project.
Prefer boundaries that pass through negative space, background, margins, or gaps between subjects. Watch faces, words, logos, hands, and fine features. A subject can cross a seam in a continuous mosaic, but the treatment should be intentional and should survive any spacing added by the destination. For pieces that will often appear alone, keep the focal point comfortably inside one file.
If several images repeatedly fail at the same boundary, reconsider the specification instead of fixing each one separately. Reducing a four-panel sequence to three may improve the entire collection and save more time than a long series of custom source edits. Consistency is valuable, but a consistently awkward result is not.

Name and package the files for easy handoff
A good name answers three questions: which source did this come from, where does it belong in the sequence, and which project owns it? A pattern such as project-subject-01 provides those answers without becoming unwieldy. Use zero-padded numbers when a set could include ten or more pieces, and keep punctuation consistent so alphabetical sorting preserves the intended order.
Organize the folder around how the assets will be used. You might keep one folder per source, or place all opening panels together when a publishing workflow handles each position in a separate pass. Include a short readme or handoff note if another person needs to know the viewing direction, grid arrangement, or approved exceptions.
Do not delete the source once the pieces are approved. Store masters, prepared working files, and final outputs in clearly separated locations. That structure makes future revisions safer: a new split can start from the prepared source rather than from a piece that has already lost the rest of the composition.
Review the result at three levels
First, review each file on its own. Check sharpness, small text, edge placement, and whether the piece has enough context for its intended use. Second, review each sequence in order. Look for broken lines, missing files, reversed progression, and panels whose visual weight feels dramatically different from their neighbors.
Third, review the complete collection. Compare similar positions across sources: do all first panels feel like openings, and do all final panels provide a satisfying close? Confirm that filenames, piece counts, dimensions, and exception notes follow the specification. Collection-level review is where subtle drift becomes visible.
Whenever possible, test a draft in the actual destination. A layout may add spacing, crop thumbnails, or show files at a size that changes the reading experience. You do not need to publish the draft; the purpose is to see the assets in context before the set is considered finished.
Final quality-control questions
- Is every expected piece present and correctly ordered?
- Are important subjects and words clear of awkward seams?
- Do related outputs share dimensions and naming patterns?
- Does each sequence work with the destination’s spacing?
- Are the master and prepared source files safely retained?
